Cheese Board with Knives

Project by

General Information

Monogramed cheese board with Knife. Pictures are from two different projects, one with walnut base and maple inlay, and one with maple base and purple heart inlay. Files should work fine with both, but inlay should probably be customized for the proper initials or whatever you are making.

1

Route Bottom

90 minutes

Route bottom pocket using the bottom pocket file (b_025_pocket_feed60_and_fin45.nc). Requires 0.25" bit and a lot of patience. Chip removal is required.

Once complete, route the outline using t_outline_feed35_fin25.nc file.

2

Top Pocket

24 minutes

Route top inlay pocket using a 0.125 bit (t_inlay_m_pocket_feed35_fin25_no_ramp.nc).

Once complete, route outside border using t_outline_feed35_fin25.nc.

3

Top Inlay/Contour

14 minutes

Route top contour from nice hardwood using t_inlay_m_contour_feed35_fin25_no_ramp.nc. Make sure contour material is held down with double sided tape around the routing area. It will break free and destroy the inlay otherwise.

Once contour is cut, carefully place in pocket. Use spare 2×4 to fully seat by hammering from top, evenly across the inlay surface until inlay is flush with top.

4

Route magnets

4 minutes

Route pocket for magnets using b_pocket_magnets.nc.

5

Install magnets

5 minutes

Install magnets. Wood glue should work; let dry for 30-60 minutes before engaging magnets.

6

Drill and cut dowel

Tape top and bottom pieces together.

Drill 1/2" hole for dowel. Cut dowel to length (~2") and install. Glue dowel to top, let bottom slide freely.

Sand dowel flush with top and bottom.

7

Trim top and bottom

Using outline cut, trim top and bottom to size using jig saw or band saw.

8

Sand, Sand, Sand

Using a belt sander or table sander, sand edges smooth to outside line cut during pocketing.

Once sides are smooth and uniform, sand top and bottom. Start with 100 grit, then 150, then 220. Finish with hand sanding with 400 grit.
