Quiet Cut Spindle Upgrade for gShield

David Ditzler

Project by

David Ditzler

General Information

One of the best upgrades for the Shapeoko is to use a spindle instead of the rotary tool that many start with. The 300 Watt Quiet Cut Spindle from Inventables works great with the Shapeoko desktop CNC. It is a great upgrade for many other DIY CNC router designs as well.

Can you panel mount the pot for the speed control? I want to make a box to put all these electronics in.

I don't have the pot with me, I gave it to Bart last night but I think it has a threaded shaft to mount it to a panel. I don't remember if it had nuts and washers on it.

Hi David, i am new in cnc router build. I was just wondering where did the 24v going to the gShield came from?

We sell the 24VDC power supply at Inventables too. https://www.inventables.com/technologies/24v-power-supply-90w

Hi David, the relay is only rated for 30VDC according to the Inventables page, yet you are using 48VDC. Did the relay operate fine with this higher voltage? Were you able to use the spindle at full speed?

Can you rebuild spindle

I purchased this kit and decided not to connect to the arduino and just manually turn it on and off. What additional parts will i need to do this and do you have instructions? Thanks.
Kristen Bruno
David Ditzler
Kristen - You can wire the spindle directly to the speed controller. Use the two motor wires and connect them to the motor out terminal on the speed controller. Then wire up the 48VDC into the power in terminal. Use the dial on speed controller for speed & start/stop.

Do i need an on off switch?.
Kristen Bruno
David Ditzler
Kristen - you won't need a on/off switch to start and stop the spindle you can just use the potentiometer (green and black knob). When you aren't using it you can turn off the whole system by using a power strip to turn off the power supplies.

The relay is rated for 30V DC and the power supply is 48V DC.. Wouldn't that be an issue going over specified tolerance?
